Black Hills

Black Hills Estate Winery was established in 1996 and proudly presents wines that have been carefully hand-crafted from vineyard to bottle. The terroir on our 27 acre vineyard on Black Sage Road is some of the most exceptional in Canada. A combination of rugged desert earth, long sunlight hours and cool nights yields the intensely flavoured grapes for which we are renowned. The deep sand and intense heat of this micro-climate enable the growth of exceptional Bordeaux grapes which are carefully hand-picked by our team.

Black Hills Alibi 2009 – Alibi is our fun, whimsical summer wine that was inspired by the great Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blends of France. This is an exceptional wine for food pairing, particularly with seafood. Our first vintage of Alibi was produced in 2003 and it has generated a loyal following ever since.  The 2009 Alibi is 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon.

“The nose on the 2009 Alibi is crisp and refreshing with lifted lime zest and grapefruit notes developing into complex tropical fruit aromas. The palate displays more citrus, grassiness and minerality which are typical characteristics for a Sauvignon Blanc. I find that this wine has great structure, a very nice mouth feel and a long smooth finish. This makes Alibi not only a fantastic wine for food but enjoyable on its own as well.” – Graham Pierce, Winemaker

Black Hills Viognier 2010 – “The nose on the 2010 Viognier picks up interesting notes of lemon, citrus and grapefruit.  The palate has a pleasing and refreshing acidity, with a very nice balance and solid mouth feel. Overall I am very pleased with the layered complexity of the 2010 Viognier, and how it makes for such an elegant and approachable wine.  It is a super versatile food pairing wine that pairs well with everything from grilled halibut to roasted chicken.  Enjoy!” – Graham Pierce, Winemaker

Black Hills Syrah 2009 – “An exuberant wine with aromas of raspberry, cherry cola, blackberry and chocolate tantalizing the nose.  On the palate this silky smooth wine reveals great complexity with notes of charred meat, mocha and cigar box. All in all full bodied, balanced wine with integrated tannins, rich mouth feel and a nice long finish.” – Graham Pierce, Winemaker

Black Hills Nota Bene 2008 – Nota Bene is Latin for “Take Note” and this Bordeaux-style blend has become exceptionally popular since its first vintage in 1999. Every drop of Nota Bene ever produced has come from our Estate vineyard and always will come only from our vineyard. Thus we have reached our production peak of 4,350 cases that we will ever be able to produce of Nota Bene.  The 2008 Nota Bene is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc.

“I am very pleased with the 2008 Nota Bene and how it displays such a great spectrum of flavours. On the nose I pick up bright aromas of cassis, plum and raspberry. I get a rich and smooth sensation on the palate with notes of mocha, spice and forest floor. This wine has great balance and structure with a velvety mouth feel and a nice long finish.” – Graham Pierce, Winemaker
