Plantagenet

Plantagenet was the first winery in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia. The winery has developed an enviable reputation for producing elegant wines with complexity, finesse and balance since 1975.  Our aim is to produce the best wine possible. Once inside the winery the wine is handcrafted and receives optimum attention. The wines reflect the complexities of the cool climate of the Great Southern region. From the crisp dry Riesling to the pepper and spice of the Shiraz, the Plantagenet wines can be enjoyed in the youth or cellared for further complexity.

After 21 years at Cape Mentelle, John Durham established a winemaking consultancy which quickly grew to over 20 clients including Plantagenet. Then Plantagenet decided they’d like John’s expertise exclusively for themselves and offered him the position of Winemaker, which he accepted in time for the 2007 vintage.  The decision to join Plantagenet wines was an easy one for John. It offered him the opportunity to experience new wine making challenges, such as Riesling, in an unfamiliar region with an old reputable company. It also gave him hands-on work producing the classics such as Shiraz and Cabernet, but with a new twist.  Most of all, as a self-confessed ‘pinot tragic’, the move provided a chance to craft a perfect pinot. And where better to indulge such a desire than in the cool-climate region of The Great Southern working in the pioneering winery of Plantagenet, a time proven producer of many great wines of strong regional provenance?

Plantagenet Omrah Unoaked Chardonnay 2007 - Aromas of fragrant lime and lemon peel, a hint of cantaloupe and an undertone chalky, stony note greeting the nose. The palate is succulent, supple and juicy with those citrus flavours driving through the core and finishing with a lick of fresh acid and savoury minerality. Drink now or stash a few away for a rainy day in a few years time.

Plantagenet Omrah Pinot Noir 2008 – Cherry and raspberry with that distinctive spice of Pinot and subtle undertones of oak derived vanilla.  Supple and smooth with lashings of sweet fruit, finely polished tannins and balanced acidity that provides a finely poised backbone for the vibrant fruit flavours and varietal spice notes that provide a great length and focus.

Plantagenet Omrah Shiraz 2007 – Very lifted, fragrant wine with damson plum, dark cherry and a spicy, pepper and cinnamon edge.  A finely balanced palate of great class with a slippery, smooth mouthfeel, and excellent persistence.  Sweet plum and black pepper flavours roll off the back of the tongue long after swallowing.  Classic fine powdery cool climate tannin.
